Biography –
Uma Ray was born in Jamshedpur, India and lives and works in Kolkata. She completed her BVA at Rabindra Bharati University specializing in Sculpture in 2004 before receiving a MFA in Sculpture from Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan in 2006. .                                                     .

Ray’s works derive mainly from her surroundings. She works across various media incorporating drawings, video, installations and music, exploring the expressive tactility of material in their most un-tampered state through her work. Current socio – political uncertainties - that lead to introspection and self-examination, and inquiry of one's identity and the social positioning of the self at such times - pique her interest. Her works evolve from her immediate experiences. They tend to be philosophical and “fragile” as she believes the nature of life to be.

Ray has had shows at AlcobaƧa, Portugal, STIFTELSEN 3,14 - International Contemporary Art Foundation; Sazmanab Platform for Contemporary Arts, Peanut Underground Art Projects, NY; Mori + Stein Gallery London, Arnot Art Museum, New York; Belgrade Art Fair, Formverk Art Space in Sweden, Casoria Contemporary Art Museum, Naples; National Museum of Singapore; Goethe Institute, Alexandria (Egypt) among other places.
